Dr. Oz: How To Lose Belly Fat

dr oz how to lose belly fatDr. Oz, just like most nutritional and health experts will tell you that the best way to get rid of belly fat is what you probably already know:  Diet and exercise.  However, Dr. Oz likes to include foods that are rich in monounsaturated fats because they help get rid of belly fat faster.

Here is a short list of “Good” belly fat foods and “Bad” belly fat foods directly from Dr. Oz himself:

Foods that make your belly flat:

1. Chocolate
2. Peanut Butter
3. Guacamole

Foods that make your belly fat:

1. Cheese
2. Margarine
3.Red Wine

So, according to Dr. Oz and other specialists, how should you lose weight around your midsection?

There are some things you can do to slim down around your midsection.  And I don’t blame you for wanting to do so.  Belly fat is the number one reason why people want to work out, diet, and lose weight.  It’s unseemly and uncomfortable and it just plains sucks to have.

If you’re like me you HATE the way you look when your belly is overweight.  It makes your body look all disproportionate.  The rest of your body may be smaller but your belly isn’t.  This used to make me CRAZY!

The good news is you can get rid of it with a little patience and a little hard work.  There are tons of different dieting systems online that you can try.  I recommend giving The Diet Solution a try as it contains an excellent diet system that will help you slim down quickly.

There are also the more popular diets that you can choose from:
Weight Watchers
Jenny Craig
Nutrisystem
Etc.

These are more involved, require more commitment, and are more costly than The Diet Solution but if you have the time and money they are definitely worth it.

If you want to lose your belly fat yourself at home, without spending any money on a proven weight loss blueprint, then follow the instructions I have below and with some time and work you can make it happen (oh, and this follows the same line of thinking that Dr. Oz uses in all of his weight loss advice).

How To Lose Belly Fat

1.Eat foods rich in monounsaturated fats.  Foods like olives, avocado, oils (flaxseed, peanut, sesame, etc.), nuts and butters, chocolate (dark choc), and more contain monounsaturated fats that help you lose belly fat.  They also help raise your good cholesterol, lower your bad cholesterol, and help increase your heart health.

2.GET RID OF JUNK FOOD!  My father recently gave up eating ice cream and within a month he had lost 10 pounds!  Of course, he ate a lot more ice cream than he should have but the point I’m trying to make is that when you eat foods that are rich in sugars and fats it’s going to have an impact on your body.  Try giving up, or severely cutting back on, fast foods, candy, cake, pie, processed foods, etc.

3.Eat more veggies and more fruit.  Eating your veggies and eating more fruit at first probably makes you curl your nose up.  I knowthat’s how I used to think.  But if you learn how to prepare them they can actually be quite tasty.  Try grilling your vegetables.  Grilled vegetables are delicious.  Find some vegetables you like.  There are so many kinds you don’t have to just stick to broccoli.  With fruit I like to substitute “dessert” for a good, sweet piece of fruit.  After lunch and dinner I’ll usually have a piece of whatever sweet fruit is in season.  Nothing is better than a nice lunch followed by a big piece of watermelon or a sweet and tangy orange.

4.Get some exercise!   Now, you don’t have to join a gym or work out in your basement for 2 hours a day.  You can simply take a nice long walk after dinner each night.  What you should do is find an exercise or two that you enjoy doing.  That way, it won’t feel like work.  I like swimming and going for long bike rides.  Sometimes I’ll mix it up and go for a long walk. Here’s a good tip:  wear some headphones/ipad for walking.  According to experts, walking or working out to music makes you burn 25% more calories.  Pick something fun like martial arts, swimming, jogging, bike riding, walking, racquet ball, tennis, basket ball, squash, volleyball, dancing, fencing, etc.  Just find something you like doing and do it as often as you can.

5.It all comes down to getting rid of more calories than you take in.  If you can lose 500 calories per day you’ll lose 1 to 2 pounds per week.  Losing 500 calories a day is not easy.  But if you cut back on bread, soda, sugar, etc. you’ll find that it’s much easier than you may have thought.

According to Dr. Oz and all other obesity and health experts, a healthy, balanced diet with regular cardiovascular exercise will help you not only get rid of that belly fat, but improve the quality of your life forever!

Part 3 The One Day Diet From Doctor Oz: Diet Rules Continued

doctor oz lose ten poundsGo back to Part 2…

Rule number eight: get some sleep

Dr. Oz warns that if you get less than seven hours of sleep each night you naturally gain weight. Some reasons maybe obvious such as the fact that when you’re tired you’re more likely to eat just to keep you energy up. It also makes the idea of taking a short walk seem like a very long cross-country hike. But it’s not all fatigue that causes these problems. Some of the explanation have to do with the chemistry of your body.

After just a few days of being deprived sleep, the hormones that control your appetite go crazy.

Specifically, the lack of sleep drives down the hormone called leptin which inhibits your appetite. At the same time it drives up the levels of another chemical called gherlin which actually tells your brain that you’re hungry and that you need to eat carbohydrates right now. When you do eat under these conditions your body stores the excess carbohydrates as fat (which relates to the cannabinoid system and possible famine mentioned earlier)

So try to get sleep. Along with establishing a decent bedtime routine try keeping your bedroom as dark as possible and reserved for sleep only. Also try and set your thermostat so that you’re comfortably cool and try to keep it below 75°. If your bedroom is too hot or too cold your going to have trouble getting the sleep you need.

Rule number nine: if you fall off the wagon get right back on

Even millionaire movie stars are often photographed with less than perfect bodies. So don’t be devastated if you find that you wandered off the path of your diet. Dr. Oz says that if you make a mistake simply get right back on track. Don’t worry about tomorrow. If you make a mistake simply start immediately from where that mistake was made. Take baby steps if need be. Don’t fret and don’t worry if you make a mistake simply continue on with the diet.

Here is Dr. Oz’s Seven-Day Eating Plan

With this seven-day eating plan you’re going to be able to shed pounds and fight belly fat. The menu is a Mediterranean-style menu that provides three meals  and two snacks per day. The total calories is around 1450 with 300 calories for breakfast, 400 calories for lunch, 500 calories for dinner, and around 125 calories for each snack. You can go ahead and exchange meals within each category (one lunch for another lunch, for example) and you can have the snacks whenever you want. This diet plan is packed with nutrients, but you should still try and have a 500 mg calcium supplement daily to make sure you get your needs.

Day One

Breakfast: ½ cup of oatmeal made with water, topped with 1/8 cup dried cherries, 2 tablespoons of slivered almonds, and 1 teaspoon of honey.

Snack: one hard-boiled eggs served with 6 ounces of low sodium vegetable juice

Lunch: a microwavable meal. One Amy’s light and lean spinach lasagna, served with salad of 2 cups mixed greens, four grape tomatoes, one fourth avacodo, 1 tablespoon Parmesan, and 2 tablespoons reduced fat vinaigrette

Dinner: one serving of fish with ½ cup bulgar and 1 cup steamed sugar snap peas

Snack: 15 grapes and one reduced fat cheddar cheese stick

Day Two

Breakfast: ¾ cup Kashi Go Lean topped with one small apple, 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, and 1 cup fat-free milk, and a dash of cinnamon

Snack: two whole grain Fig Newtons

Lunch: a Delhi twist. Spread 1 tablespoon red pepper hummus and one medium whole wheat pita and stuff with 2 ounce lean deli turkey breast, one red onion sliced, and ¼ cup each of chopped pepper and cucumber. For dessert have 1 cup strawberries topped with ¼ cup nonfat Greek yogurt, 1 teaspoon of sunflower seeds, and 1 teaspoon of honey.

Dinner: a lentil salad served with 1/3 cup cooked brown rice topped with ½ teaspoon of toasted pine nuts.

Snack: one 100 calorie bag of popcorn sprinkled with 2 teaspoons of Parmesan

Part 2 Of Dr. Oz’s One Day Diet: How To Lose 10 Pounds In Only One Month

dr ozs one day dietRule number four: keep a full belly

What most diets don’t tell you, but what’s very true, and vary suprising, is that you should try and eat to make sure that you maintain a high metabolism. Most people don’t realize that eating more can actually keep your metabolism higher so you burn more calories. If you let yourself get too hungry you’ll inevitably want to binge on carbohydrates and sugar which will send your blood sugar soaring. When this happens your insulin goes up which causes your blood sugar to plunge again and creates within you more hunger for more food.

With this diet you still have three meals a day but Dr. Oz recommends that you add additional snacks that include proteins and fats that will fill you up. Proteins as well as fats make you feel full because it affects hormones that determine your appetite.

Rule number five get moving

There a couple of things you can do to keep your metabolism burning at a high rate:

The first is that you should drink water with every single meal. A recent study in Germany found that drinking 17 ounces of water can actually increase your calorie burning by 24%. Researchers also found that green tea can help keep your metabolism in high gear and help you burn body fat faster.

The second thing you can do is take a short walk after you eat. Dr. Oz recommends that you walk at least 20 minutes per short walk, that you walk at a strong pace, and that you keep good posture with your belly tucked in. Dr. Oz says that this exercises your core muscles which helps give you a firm base of support for your other bodily movements.

The walking alone isn’t enough. To build the kind of stronger, leaner, fat and calorie burning muscles that you need you’re going to have to do some weight training. This doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym and use barbells. You can buy a few 5 pound weights and use them at home. You can also try to do workout videos that center around exercises like yoga and Pilates.

Rule number six: watch your portion size

The size of your food really counts so you need to be careful. For example a small potato contains around 135 calories. A large potato, on the other hand can be over 400 calories (and that’s even before you add the sour cream and butter). A lot of the problems people have with weight control is the fact that they go over by just a few hundred calories on a daily basis. This is actually one of the reasons why so many people are overweight even when they don’t binge on processed foods.

Because of the fact that you’re more than likely not going to be able to carry a measuring cup and a ruler with you at all times you’re going to have a little bit of trouble figuring out portion size. One of the best ways to do it, if you don’t have a measuring cup with you is to simply use your fist. A 1 cup serving of cereal, rice, pasta, ice cream, etc. is about the same size as your fist. A tablespoon of salad dressing, peanut butter, cream cheese, is about the size of your thumb. The tip of your thumb, represents about a teaspoon of butter, mayonnaise, or oil.

Rule number seven: release your stress

Stress is one of the archenemies of weight loss as it can cause you to undo almost all the hard work that you’ve done with your diet. Not only does stress cause people to eat, but also produces chemicals and hormones that can actually make your waist expand. Dr. Oz explains that for centuries the main cause of stress was famine.   Now when the body undergoes stress the theory is that the body is perceiving famine.  This triggers a system called the cannabinoid system. This system makes your body crave food and then when you eat it stores those calories as fat in your belly. So try to relieve stress however you can. Try meditation and deep breathing or maybe a long walk or a long swim.

Dr. Oz’s One Day Diet Part 1: Lose 10 Pounds In A Month

the doctor oz one day dietLong before any of us had heard of the Mediterranean diet, Dr. Oz had already been reaping its benefits. The one-day diet is a diet that focuses on the Mediterranean diet and how there are easy rules that you can follow that will help you lose 10 pounds a month and stay Slim forever.

Dr. Oz loves this diet plan because it can help you lower the risk of heart disease, type II diabetes, obesity, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Dr. Oz says that the diet is satisfying and fun and makes you feel so full that you don’t want to eat anymore.

With this diet you can lose up to 2 inches and 10 pounds in just a month. The eating plan listed below as well as the simple diet rules should be followed as closely as you possibly can.

If you want a similar diet plan that is very specific and offers much more detail and support try The Lifetime Diet.  It’s made up of similar eating plans and includes exercise plans, motivational MP3s, bonus books, and more. It’s perfect for those people looking for something similar to what Dr. Oz recommends here and it’s much more comprehensive.

First let’s start with the rules you’ll need to follow this diet.

Rule number one: you need to renew your vows daily

Begin each morning anew, and make the re-commitment of sticking to the diet plan one day at a time, day after day. This will help you keep the energy and motivation that people usually bring to new projects.

The second you get out of bed, say to yourself, I’m going to follow this plan for the next 24 hours. Once you say that you also want to remind yourself of the reasons why you want to lose weight. Always keep the reasons why you’re doing this in the back of your mind so you can pull them up at a moments notice and go over them in moments of weakness.

Rule number two: every day do something different

Try and do something a little different on a daily basis to help shake up the patterns that you normally are into. This helps you become more mindful about how and when you eat, how you act and how you think when you’re under stress, and what you could be doing instead. One great example of this is that if you start to feel a little stressed and hungry and you want to eat try doing something completely different than what you normally do. This will help you focus more on what you’re doing and less on being stressed and “hungry.”

In other words if you find that you want to snack out of stress or boredom, do something that you usually don’t do to distract your mind from food!

Rule number three: set up your kitchen for success

You want your kitchen to be full of only beneficial options. But don’t worry because with the Mediterranean diet you’ll have tons of great options. With the Mediterranean diet you get lots of  healthy fats such as olive oil, avacados, sunflower seeds, nuts, and other foods that are very satisfying even when you only eat a small quantity. The reason why these are so satisfying and so filling is because they contain beneficial fats which make you feel fuller longer and also gives you a much better and much more pleasing taste.

With this diet you’ll have lean meat or fish every day but the majority of the foods you will be eating are vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. What’s great about eating foods like this is that they’re loaded with fiber which slows down your digestion and will prevent you from being hungry without adding a lot of calories. And when you think of whole grains, don’t just think of bread. Dr. Oz says with the Mediterranean diet you want to try other grains such as quinoa.

The Dr. Oz Green Drink Recipe And Its Benefits

Dr. Oz Green Drink RecipeRecently on the Oprah Winfrey show she drank a glass of the Doctor Oz Green Drink.  Now, like most of you, I tried to write down the recipe but failed to get it down.

When Oprah’s website put the Dr. Oz green drink recipe online it didn’t include any of the amounts for the individual ingredients. But after a little research I’ve found the recipe.

The drink itself is very tasty but some people may find that it’s not something they want to drink daily, and that’s fine.  I myself don’t drink it on a daily basis (usually about 3 or 4 times per week).  I’ll mix it up day-by-day with oatmeal, fruit, eggs, etc.

Below I’ve actually listed 3 different recipes.  1 is for the green Dr. Oz smoothie recipe from the show, 2 is from the website, and the third is for cod liver oil.  Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Ick! Cod liver oil?  Gross!” and initially I had the same reaction.  But after learning about all the health benefits of cod liver oil, I decided to give it a shot.  You should consider it yourself.

1 head of organic celery
2 cups of chopped, organic cucumber
1 tsp of organic ginger root
2 chopped and cored organic apples

Juice from ½ of an organic lemon (you can use the whole lemon if you don’t mind the flavor and you don’t have plans for the other half)

To make add all your ingredients to a blender, blend and then serve!

Cod Liver Oil

This is simply a shot of cod liver oil.  If you’re like me you remember cod liver oil from the old Little Rascals series.  It seemed that adults were always trying to force it in their mouths.  The expressions the kids would have as they tasted it was priceless!   But with recent research it’s been found that cod liver oil has some fantastic health benefits.  It seems that it contains a high amount of vitamin D3.  People in the North who don’t get enough sun eat plenty cod liver oil and they are healthy.  It’s loaded with healthy fats.

You should try to get a shot in every morning with your green drink or other breakfast foods.  Dr. Oz himself drinks a shot every morning with his green drink.

Dr. Oz Green Drink Benefits

So what are the health benefits of the green drink? There are many! It’s rich in dietary fiber (12 g), and the antioxidant vitamins  A,C, and E.   These nutrients keep our cells health and strong by preventing damage from free radicals and also repairing cells that are already damaged by free radicals.  Also, these drinks are so loaded with nutrients that it will boost your immune system’s strength and help your body prevent and fight off infection.  The drinks are around 215 calories per serving.  If you are keeping track of your calories and points for Weight Watchers then the drink will cost you 3 points.

This drink tastes good and is really worth it in the end.  Try it yourself today and soon you’ll be reaping the benefits.

The Dr. Oz Detox Diet

dr oz detox dietThe Dr. Oz detox diet is designed around responsible and healthy eating instead of like most diets that focus on eating to lose weight.

Eating simply to lose weight most often is not effective and if it is, the weight loss achieved is only temporary.

The Dr. Oz cleansing diet focuses on disease prevention and the overall health of a person.  He believes that if you focus on eating foods that prevent stroke, heart disease, cancer and diabetes that weight loss will be a natural side-effect.  And it is.

One woman, Marie Anaya, who lost her husband on 9/11 was one of the first people to go on Dr. Oz’s detox diet.  She had to spend the first month “detoxing” from processed foods.  No restaurant food, cookies, cakes, candy, chips, etc.  Within 4 weeks she had lost 13 pounds and her waistline was smaller by 3 inches.

The Detox Diet by Dr. Oz recommends that you completely eliminate processed foods and eat only healthy and fresh foods.  After following this diet after only 6 months, Marie had lost 45 pounds.  She also says that she has lots of energy and that she feels years younger.

To follow Doctor Oz’s detox diet you don’t have to be a professional chef.  The types of foods you eat are simple, yet delicious, like fruit and Greek yogurt, turkey, shrimp, salads, etc.  Included in this diet is lots of fiber because not only does it keep you fuller longer so you eat less, but it also aids digestion and helps keep you regular, which is important. Unrefined carbohydrates such as brown rice and whole wheat pastas are included because they are healthier than alternatives and they have the added benefit of causing your body to burn more fat as opposed to storing it.

Also recommended by Dr. Oz is daily exercise.  Starting with walking for a short period (around 20-25 minutes a day) and working up to vigorous walking, running, yoga, swimming, bicycling or whatever type of cardiovascular exercise that you enjoy doing.

Starting The Cleansing Diet

When you begin on this cleansing diet you should first clear all of the “negative” type foods from your pantry.  Get rid of the potato chips, frozen pizzas, packaged cakes, cookies, etc.  You want fresh fruit, vegetables, whole-grains, whole wheat pastas, brown rice, green tea, lean meats, and fish (not fried or breaded). Learn more about Dr. Oz’s Favorite Foods.

When you eat on this detox diet you should stop eating before you feel overly full.  Dr. Oz calls it “being stuffed.”  This feeling of being “too full” is not good for your body or your waistline.  He says that on a scale of fullness from 1 to 10  (1 being hungry and 10 being “stuffed”) you should stop eating at about 6. Overeating is the arch-enemy of health and weight loss.  Not only will it force your body to store fat but it’s bad for your heart, your circulatory system, and even your brain.

Th detox diet includes 5 meals daily (2 snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner).  The foods you should be eating for each meal should not include anything that contains trans-fats and refined carbohydrates like white sugar and white rice.  What you should be eating are leafy greens, colorful vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, chard, red peppers, radishes, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc.

You can download a free list of all the different colorful fruits and vegetables that are healthy for you right here:  Taste A Rainbow Of Fruits And Vegetables For Better Health*

*From Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D. L.R.D., Food and Nutrition Specialist

You want to eat at least 9 handfuls/cups of fresh fruits and vegetables every day.  Try to avoid all bad fats (trans and saturated fats) but you can consume good fats like monounsaturated (olive oil, sunflower oil, avocados, etc.).  Also you should be drinking lots of water.  Doctor Oz recommends that you drink at least 8 to 12 glasses a day.  This is very important as water keeps you hydrated which gives you energy, boosts your metabolism, and also flushes toxins out of your body.

As mentioned before you should try and accomplish at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise daily.  If you are not physically fit or have been inactive for quite some time you should start out slowly with short walks and build up slowly to longer walks and more vigorous exercise.

The Favorite Foods Of Dr. Oz

dr ozs favorite foodsOprah’s favorite doctor, Dr. Mehmet Oz provides a list of his favorite, most healthy foods, that you should be stocking your pantry with.  Here are Dr. Oz’s favorite foods:

Almonds

Almonds make the best snack,  Dr Oz says, because they contain high amounts of fiber and protein that will keep you full.    Oz recommends that you soak your almonds in water because it brings out their sweetness (which is great for those who like a sweeter treat).

Broccoli

Dr. Oz likes broccoli because he says it “is simply the best medicine we have. It gets toxins out of your liver like no other medicine or food on the planet.”

Green Tea

Oz likes green tea because it tastes great, gives you a nice boost because of the caffeine, supplies your body with healthy antioxidants, and even increases your metabolism.

Coffee

Doctor Oz likes coffee because it is the number-one source of antioxidants for people in our society.  He recommends  few cups a day but prefers Green Tea because it provides a few additional nutrients that coffee does not.

Eggs

Eggs are filling and are rich in valuable protein.   Plus they are inexpensive.  Dr. Oz recommends that you think beyond breakfast in terms of eating eggs.  He recommends that you try omelets or frittatas for lunch and dinner.

Steel-cut Oatmeal

This is what Dr. Oz himself has for breakfast each morning.  It’s filling, contains fiber and other important nutrients, is inexpensive, and low calorie.  Plus it goes great with a little brown sugar and fresh or frozen fruit.  Add some protein and flavor by throwing a small handful of nuts on top.

Greek Yogurt (Low-Fat)

Try to find the low-fat Greek yogurt that does not have any added sugar.  If you want to add some sweetness to it Dr. Oz recommends that you add honey or some fruit.

Fresh Fruits

Dr. Oz doesn’t recommend that you eat any fruit products that are processed like chews or juice because they are high in sugar and missing valuable nutrients that the whole fruit contains (like fiber).  Dr. Oz says “The sugar in fruit is naturally occurring, meaning it’s not man-made or artificially added, which makes it the healthiest sugar out there.”

Learn more about The Dr. Oz Detox Diet and find out exactly how he recommends you lose weight.

Dark Chocolate

Dr. Oz says that dark chocolate “counts as health food” because it contains natural chemicals called flavanoids which are high in antioxidants.   Antioxidants help your body fight off disease and also improves the function of your blood vessels.  Try to get an ounce or two a day and make sure it’s 70% cocoa.  Avoid milk chocolate because it’s really just “milk fat with a chocolate coating” says Dr. Oz.
