Can Eating Bread Make You Fat

Just about anyone who has ever dieted has probably heard that eating bread can make a person gain weight.  But, is it true?  Does eating bread make you fat?  Is there a difference between eating wheat bread and eating white bread?

Most grocery stores have a wide selection of bread products.  There is a huge variety available, from bagels and pitas to whole wheat muffins and multi-grain bread.  You may be wondering, can white bread make you fat?  White bread is made of bleached flour.  The outer layer of the wheat grain, called the bran, is removed.  The next layer, called the germ, is also removed.  Only the white, starchy part of the grain is used.  White bread has few nutrients, and is high in carbohydrates.  It is digested quickly because it does not have much substance to it, and the carbs enter into the bloodstream quickly.  Because sugars from the bread go into and out of the bloodstream fast, eating this kind of food may make a person hungry again fairly soon.  Eating too much white bread, like just about any other food, can lead to weight gain.

Wheat bread is a far healthier choice than white, but can wheat bread make you fat?  With wheat bread, the whole wheat grain is used, including the bran and germ.  (Or at least it should be.  Some bread makers add coloring to make bread look darker, but it is not actually whole wheat.  Make sure to check the ingredients to see if whole wheat or whole grain is the first ingredient.)

Because the whole wheat grain is used, bread made from whole wheat has more fiber, more vitamins like E and B6, and more folic acid, magnesium, chromium, and zinc.   This makes wheat flour much more nutrient rich than bread made from white flour.  When you eat whole wheat, it takes your stomach longer to break it down, so you stay full for longer and you may tend to eat less.  Wheat bread is a better choice than white, but because it still contains high amounts of carbohydrates, it can still cause weight gain.

There are also many multi-grain breads on the market these days.  Can whole grain bread make you fat?  At this point, the answer to that question should be pretty obvious.  Bread, no matter what it is made of, is high in calories and carbohydrates.  Whole grain and multi-grain breads can make you fat. However, because they have more substance to them, they should make a person full for longer. Because a person has to eat fewer pieces of whole grain bread than white bread throughout the day to feel satisfied, whole grain breads may not contribute to as much weight gain as white breads.

Bread can also be somewhat difficult for your body to process, so breads that are higher in fiber are a good choice.

Eating any food in excess can make a person gain weight.  With bread, there are both good choices and bad choices.  Make sure to look at the label to see what you are really getting before you buy the bread.  Buy bread that is high in fiber.

Whole wheat and multi-grain breads are usually the best choice.  Generally speaking, the more expensive the bread is, the healthier it is.  It is also important to keep servings small.  Instead of two slices, have only one.  Try not to have bread for every meal.  It may be a good idea to substitute healthier options like beans instead.  Instead of having a sandwich, try having a salad.  Skip the toast at breakfast, and have some whole grain cereal instead.  Try to limit yourself to two slices of bread or less every day.  Once you go a while without it, you may find you don’t even miss it.  Developing healthy eating habits is one of the best ways to control and maintain your weight.  With a few wise choices, it is easy to find ways to remove excess bread from your diet, and maybe a few excess pounds as well!

Bread doesn’t make you fat that is if you don’t eat it too much. But then again everything makes you fat if you eat too much of it. If you exercise regularly you can eat as much bread as you want! You will burn the calories you’ve gained by eating bread. Also, there are many types of bread, some contain more calories while other types contain less calories. For example corn bread has a lot of protein and is actually a good choice when you are doing sports.

      Hey Tej,

You’re right. Bread alone won’t make you fat. However, I wouldn’t recommend anyone eat as much bread as they want. I know if I did I’d have a lot more trouble losing weight :) Thanks for the comment. Oh, and I like your website!
