Drinking Olive Oil For Weight Loss

I got an email the other day from a newsletter subscriber who asked me, “is olive oil good for weight loss?”  After some research I found that yes, it actually is!  I was surprised and delighted because I actually use quite a bit of olive oil in my cooking.  So I decided to write this post to give you some detail on how to use olive oil for weight loss.

Olive oil has always been a very important part of a balanced and healthy diet.  Now, thanks to current research, it’s been found that taking 1 tbsp per day of olive oil can help you lose up to a pound per week!

The Italians have used olives and olive oil for thousands of years and it has been a staple of the Mediterranean diet also for thousands of years.  Recently, the Mediterranean diet has become popular in the United States and now drinking olive oil for weight loss is beginning to become popular.

Olive Oil And Weight Loss

Let’s go over the important points:

1.Olive oil is a “good fat” that burns off 3 times faster than other bad fats.  Bad fats are trans fats that you would find in commercially produced food products.

2.One of the compounds in olive oil called oleic acid has fat fighting benefits.  This fatty acid supposedly stops your fatty tissues from absorbing fat carried by your blood cells.   It also helps burn off fat faster by quickly secreting fat that has been stored into your bloodstream.

3.When you digest olive oil, the oleic acid converts into a hormone that fights hunger.  This hormone (known as OEA) tells your brain you are full by stimulating nerve cells.

4.Olive oil increases your metabolism.  Studies have found that if you eat a tablespoon of olive oil in the morning on an empty stomach that it can boost your metabolism by over 60%. Researchers believe that olive oil burns fast and burns hot so that it creates a metabolic boost in your system.

It’s recommended that you take a single tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil for weight loss (on an empty stomach).

Health Benefits Of Olive Oil For Weight Loss

According to most nutritionists and obesity specialists, olive oil is a healthy oil rich in beneficial fats and nutrients.  Olive oil is a MUFA food meaning that it’s a monounsaturated fatty acid food.  Monounsaturated fats help with weight loss (they also target belly fat especially) and they help lower LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol).  The FDA (The United States Food and Drug Administration) recommends taking one or two whole tablespoons of olive oil per day to help reduce your risk of heart disease.

Your Shopping List

When you go and buy olive oil at your local grocery store you should purchase ‘extra-virgin olive oil’.  Extra-virgin olive oil is the purest form you can purchase and they contain the most powerful nutrients for your heart, weight loss, and overall health.  For pure taste you want to purchase an olive oil that was imported from Italy.

Olive oil is best consumed without cooking.  However it is still a healthy choice to cook with.
