What Do You Eat On The 17 Day Diet

If you’re thinking about starting a new diet, then you may want to think about the 17 Day Diet.  It’s not for everyone and it’s not necessarily made for the long-haul (after all, it only lasts 17 days).

So I’ve laid out some of the finer details of the program for you below so you can decide for yourself if it’s a diet that you should go with or if you’d be better off with something else.

What Do You Eat?

This diet is a GOOD diet.  I say that because it’s not like some diets that tell you to eat whatever you want on Wednesdays and then the rest of the week have you eating spinach soup.  The 17 Day Diet actually has you eating healthy foods so it’s nutritious and balanced.  This is essentially how you should be eating anyway so it’s a great place to learn how to structure your diet for the rest of your life.

The 17 Day Diet meal plan is made up primarily of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins.  This is what really separates this diet from most “fad” diets like the lemonade diet or the cabbage soup diet.   This diet is recommended because you get balanced nutrition and it’s a diet you can follow for life.  Also included are probiotics and green tea which helps not only aid in digestion but also increases your metabolism (green tea has been shown to increase metabolism by as much as 4%).

How Does It Work?

You follow a simple diet plan that has nothing to do with counting calories, counting points, buying prepacked foods, attending meetings, or keeping food journals.  This is a simplified diet for people who like things nice and simple.  You won’t be needing a calorie calculator with this diet.  Diets that do require things like food journals and calorie calculators are good and some of them are excellent, but if it’s not your thing then you should consider the Seventeen Day Diet because it keeps things nice and simple.

The Cycles

According to the diet’s author (Dr. Mike Moreno) this diet works by confusing your metabolism.  It does this through what the doctor calls “cycles.”   What you do is through four cycles you alter the amounts of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates you eat every couple of days.  Each individual cycle has a separate goal.

Here are the 4 cycles you will go through with the 17 Day Diet:

Accelerate

This is the cycle that focuses on burning fat, cleansing your body, and losing weight quickly by eliminating the storage of fat.

Activate

This is the cycle that focuses on resetting your metabolism.

Achieve

This cycle focuses on showing you proper nutrition.  It focuses on how to correctly eat carbohydrates and how to structure your meals so that you are satisfied and receive the optimum amount of nutrition.

Arrive

This cycle takes the first 3 cycles and then combines them.

What You Have To Avoid

With the 17 Day Diet you have to avoid foods that are “unclean.”  This means you have to avoid any foods that are processed, contain unhealthy fats and unhealthy sugars.  This is the hardest part of the diet.  Most people are addicted to fats and sugars and some have likened giving them up to giving up cigarettes.  But in order to lose weight this quickly you have to go “cold turkey” and give up these types of foods.

Here are the basic guidelines to “clean eating”:

1.Eliminate sugar (refined)
2.No booze (no alcohol at all)
3.Breakfast is a MUST
4.Absolutely NO processed foods
5.Drink a lot more water
6.Eat only natural and organic (if possible) foods

The 17 Day Diet also focuses on exercise.  It’s not as much a priority as food but it’s still important.  You will learn the 17 minute daily exercise plan that will help you get in shape as well as lose weight (which is important for life-long weight loss).

One of the aspects of this diet that you may like is that during the weekends you can eat whatever you want.  I don’t recommend that you go crazy on the weekend and eat 4 large pizzas and 5 banana splits but you can eat foods that you aren’t supposed to eat during the week.

All-in-all the 17 Day Diet plan is a great plan that you can follow to lose weight.  If you are thinking more long-term you may want to consider a more in-depth and continual diet plan that you can follow for your whole life.  But if you want quick results, which isn’t easy with weight loss, then the 17 Day Diet may work for you.

As always, consult your doctor before you start any exercise or diet routine.

Where To Buy The Book

You can find the book at Amazon.com or other online book retailers.  You may be able to find copies at your local bookstores also.  Try larger chain stores like Barnes And Noble or Books And Company.  These larger stores would be more likely to carry the book than your smaller niche stores.  Try calling the store before you go just in case they don’t carry it.  That way you don’t have to waste any time!

      Hey Happiness,

The 17 Day Diet is a good diet that will help you lose weight. If you’re serious about it and stick with it you will lose weight. Just make sure to continue eating healthy (fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, whole grains) after the diet is over.

Cutting way down on carbohydrates in the first 17 days can reset your metabolism by decreasing the insulin demands. Not only is insulin needed and is produced by the pancreas in response to blood glucose elevation, it also is responsible for fat storage. So, by limiting any foods that increases blood glucose, you are limiting the amount of insulin in your body so this explains the rapid weight loss in the beginning. Then slowly adding back healthy carbohydrates will start to get your body going a gain in a controlled manner. I’ve lost 21 pounds and proved to myself how eating too much sugar daily is sabotaging our bodies. Good eating to you!

So far I like what I am reading about this eating plan. Both insulin and leptin levels will be managed better with this plan, but do be careful about the fruit. Lots of fruits are pretty high in sugar content — and even “natural” sugar is a problem if you are trying to get blood glucose levels under control.

      Hey Jaime,

Here is more information on the 17 Day Diet including a sample daily menu: http://www.everydiet.org/diet/17-day-diet

Here is a summary of the diet from that same website: The 17 Day Diet involves adjusting your intake of carbohydrates, fat, protein and calories over a series of 17 day cycles, which may have the effect of boosting metabolism and preventing the plateaus that are common with most diets.

Even though the plan was created to help dieters avoid holiday weight gain The 17 Day Diet can be followed at any time when fast and effective weight loss is desired. However dieters must be aware that permanent changes in eating patterns, lifestyle habits, attitudes and beliefs are essential if weight loss is to be maintained.

Personally, I think you should simply eliminate sugary, high-fat,high-calorie processed foods from your diet, drink nothing but water and unsweetened tea, and eat more fruits and vegetables than anything else. Add exercising 4-5 times per week and you’ll lose that weight and keep it off for life.

A diet like the 17 day diet will not help you address long-term weight loss. You have to change your lifestyle overall and focus on being healthier. If not you’ll possibly gain back all the weight you’ll lose on this or any other diet.
